Just about finished. I used a waterbase paint to stain the wood. I will use a water seal, matte spray. The roof will have the paper crimper, soda can tin look. Click here for photo with the tin roof on. |
Rougn cut on the door. It's beginning to look like something other than a bird house. I used a Dremel variable speed dremel. The bit I used was a #194, high speed bit. |
Michael's is an arts and crafts store. They seem to have pretty good distribution all over the USA. In their seasonal section, there are unpainted bird houses. There are 3 that would make pretty good buildings for your Large Scale Layout. Check them out. |

These are $3.99. Made out of a untreated wood. There is another with a small porch. I will get that one also. The wood is scribed, not individual "logs" built up. Better to hold up against the elements. |
Window completed although I put in the brown window later. The base of the house is solid so you would have to bore a hole for a light. |
Hmmm. the door needs to be a little different. I cut out the door and window with the trusty Dremel tool. The wood is pretty thick, 1/2". |
More left over Piko pieces. Nice plastic with wood grain will be cut up to make the front door. |
Rougn cut on the door. It's beginning to look like something other than a bird house. I used a Dremel variable speed dremel. The bit I used was a #194, high speed bit. |
I took some of the plastic "trees" from the Piko pieces and cut them to make the door frame. |
Penciled in a spot for the window. Merely traced the window from one of the 3 Piko windows I had left over from the shop series [Piko kits #62204, #63205, #62206, etc]. . |
I never throw out the extra pieces from the Piko buildings I have made. There generally is extra windows, stone, wood, stove chimneys, etc. |

Added another Piko part - a spare pot belly stove chimney. I drilled a hole in the roof at the proper angle so it would sit correct on the roof. |
Back of home made door. Again I used the plastic "trees" of the Piko pieces. |
Since the door won't open, I put a couple of braces on the top and bottom so I could glue the door solidly in place. |
For $4.00 and some extra pieces of Piko, it will look good in the local mountains. I will add to it later with extra details |
