First Run New Big Hauler 10th Anniversary and no instructions?
The more recent versions have new packaging and information on the locomotive.

You just purchased your Big Hauler and there are no instructions.  Darn!  Well here are some instructions to help you out! The 10 th Anniversary Engine was created by Bachmann to say "Thank You" for the many years of buying Bachmann Large Scale.  If it was your first Large Scale engine - you will notice that there are no instructions.  Well here is an "E" {Electronic} version to assist you.

The photo on the left shows the heating element.  You DO NOT have to take off the smoke stack to add smoke fluid.  Mine was loose so I took it off to take a look at the works.  Do not expect more than 10 minutes of smoke with the few drops that you will add.  ONLY USE APPROVED SMOKE DROPS!

Lube it up!

Look at the photo on the above right. There is a small plastic cap on the underside of the Big Hauler.  Pry this off.  The photo shows the cap off.  You can see the white of the main gear.  Some gear grease should be used.  Bachmann, LGB, etc. make various types. I use Hob-E-Lub Gear Lube (HL-655).  Put some lubricant on the gear.

I would suggest oiling the axles.  There is a brass bushing that the axle turns in on the 3 Large wheeled axles.  Use a plastic safe oil.  I use LaBelle 107.  You should use a conductive grease on the front pivot of the Pilot wheels [the four wheels in front].  Since the drive rods are metal, a spot of oil on key points wouldn't hurt.  DON"T OVERDO IT.  The lube and oil go a long way.  More is not necessarily better.
Where is my Sound?

You need a good quality 9 Volt battery for the tender. See photo on above. There is a diagram on the tender as how to insert the battery on the battery door.  These fit SNUGLY.  You will need to carefully pry them out when the battery needs replacing.  I would suggest using a pair of needle nose pliers to get the battery out.

Where is the Smoke?

There are two switches in front of the Big Hauler just under the front light, in front of the boiler inspection door.  There is a tiny latch at about the 10 o'clock position as you face the boiler inspection plate.

The top button in for reversing the polarity of the engine, the bottom is for the smoke.  They are marked. Make sure the smoke button is on for the unit to smoke. Let the train run a little to heat up the element.  Use only about 5-8 drops down center of the tube.  The smoke fluid should hit the wick.  If you have "warmed" up the element, you will see the smoke puff up.  NOTE: Do not have the smoke unit on if you DO NOT have any smoke fluid in the unit.  These smoke units tend to burn out if left on with no smoke fluid!
