LGB Mikado and 4 chuffs per revolution
Note - this information is for 1st Gen run of LGB Mikados.  There are
3 circuit board versions now out for the LGB Mikado.

It was noted that the LGB Mikado did NOT have 4 chuffs per revolution.  Well, a letter to Garden Railways Magazine [April, 2002 issue] by Jan Heine of Seattle, Washington offered a helpful tip.  Thanks, Jan, for bringing it to our attention.
The front boiler plate easily comes off the LGB Mikado.  There are 3 small phillips head screws holding on the circuit board protector cover.

After you get the plate off, take the smoke unit wires off the front of the circuit card. These are attached to too posts on the circuit card.  A small pair of needle nose pliers works best to get these off as they are quite snug.

You will have to disconnect the black and white wires from the smoke unit that plug into the front of the circuit board.  Turn the smoke stack a quarter of a turn and lift out. The board will not come out all the way unless you do that.  The board slides easily out.  It may hang up a little.  Just wiggle it out.  The 2 dip switches are on the left side of the board as you are facing the engine.
These are the two dipswitches.  Take dipswitch number 1 and slide it to off.  The above photo shows the dipswitch in the "on" position.
The whole process probably will take you 10 minutes.  The circuit board easily slides out so you can add the MTS decoder.

The above photo shows the dip switch in the off position. You are done! Reassemble.  The number 2 dip controls the brake squeal.  If you set it to "off", the brake squeal will no longer sound unless you use the MTS system.
All you need is a small phillips head screwdriver and a pair of needle nose pliers.  I was amazed as to how much circuitry is in this beastie.  Now I know why the cost is what it is...
